How to Extract High-Value Rice Bran Wax from Rice Bran Oil? Complete Process Explained

rice bran wax equipment

Rice bran, long regarded as a “waste” by-product of rice processing, is undergoing a value awakening. With an oil content of 15%–20%, rice bran can achieve an oil recovery rate of over 90% through rice bran oil solvent extraction technology. And during the refining of rice bran oil, there is another high-value by-product that is often overlooked – rice bran wax.

Rice bran wax is a naturally occurring wax ester in rice bran oil, accounting for approximately 3%–9% of the oil. It is not just a “by-product” of the winterization and dewaxing process; it is also a high-value natural raw material widely used in cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and industrial applications. The global rice bran wax market is projected to reach $915 million by 2025 and is expected to grow to $1.576 billion by 2034.

So, how is high-value refined rice bran wax extracted from rice bran oil? This article will walk you through the complete 8-step process from crude wax to refined wax.

I. Source of Rice Bran Wax: A “By-Product” of Rice Bran Oil Refining

Rice bran oil contains a certain amount of natural wax. During rice bran oil refining, winterization and dewaxing are the key processes for removing these waxes. Crude rice bran oil is first heated to approximately 50°C and filtered to remove solid impurities; then slowly cooled to 5–12°C and held for 8–12 hours to allow wax crystallization and precipitation, forming a cloudy wax slurry.

Crude wax separation typically uses two methods:

  • Plate-and-frame filtration: Low-temperature pressure filtration, producing a filter cake of crude wax (a slurry containing 40%–60% neutral oil), with the filtrate being dewaxed rice bran oil
  • Centrifugal separation: Using a horizontal centrifuge for high-speed separation, offering higher efficiency and suitable for large-scale oil mills

The resulting crude wax is a dark brown paste containing significant amounts of oil, gums, pigments, and phospholipids, requiring refining for commercial use.

Choosing reliable dewaxing equipment (such as crystallization tanks, plate-and-frame filter presses, and horizontal centrifuges) is key to ensuring efficient crude wax separation.

II. The 8 Key Steps of Rice Bran Wax Refining

Step 1: Crude Wax Melting and Vacuum Dehydration

Crude wax is first melted at 80–100°C and then subjected to vacuum drying at 105°C to thoroughly remove moisture. The presence of moisture can affect the subsequent solvent degreasing step, making this stage crucial.

Core Equipment: Melting tank, vacuum drying system

Step 2: Solvent Degreasing/Extraction – The Core Purification Step

This is the most critical step in rice bran wax refining. Acetone or isopropanol is added at a wax-to-solvent ratio of 1:4 to 1:7, and the mixture is refluxed at 75–85°C with stirring for 1.5–2 hours.

It is then slowly cooled to 20–30°C, causing the wax to crystallize and precipitate, while oils and gums dissolve in the solvent. This step effectively removes large amounts of neutral oil and gum impurities from the crude wax.

Core Equipment: Solvent degreasing tank (with reflux condenser and agitation system), cooling system

Step 3: Filtration and Separation

The crystallized mixture is subjected to pressure filtration or centrifugal separation. The filter cake is defatted crude wax, while the filtrate is sent to an evaporator for solvent recovery (for recycling) and rice bran oil recovery.

Core Equipment: Pressure filter, centrifugal separator, solvent recovery system

Step 4: Degumming and Purification

The defatted wax is treated with isopropanol and a small amount of magnesium hydroxide, refluxed at 80°C, and allowed to stand for gum precipitation, followed by separation of the dark impurity layer. This step further removes residual gums and colored substances from the wax.

Core Equipment: Degumming reactor, separation equipment

Step 5: Solvent Removal

The filter cake is subjected to low-pressure distillation to completely remove residual solvent. For food-grade products, residual solvent must be controlled below <50 ppm. This is a critical control point for ensuring product safety and compliance.

Core Equipment: Low-pressure distillation system

Step 6: Deep Bleaching

The wax is dissolved in n-hexane, and activated bleaching clay with a small amount of activated carbon is added for bleaching/filtration at 65°C. This step significantly improves the whiteness of the wax, transforming it from dark brown to light-colored or white.

Core Equipment: Bleaching tank, leaf filter

Step 7: Molecular Distillation – The “Crowning Touch” for Premium Products

For premium food-grade or pharmaceutical-grade rice bran wax, an optional molecular distillation step is available. Under high vacuum at 180–200°C, short-path distillation removes odors and trace free fatty acids, yielding pure, odorless refined rice bran wax.

Core Equipment: Molecular distillation unit (short-path evaporator), high-vacuum system

Step 8: Casting and Forming

The liquid wax is cooled and cast into finished products in granule, block, or flake form. The formed products are convenient for packaging, transportation, and end-use applications.

Core Equipment: Casting former, cooling system

III. Applications of Refined Rice Bran Wax

Refined rice bran wax, with its natural and safe properties, finds wide application across multiple industries:

Application Field Specific Uses
Cosmetics Thickeners and emollients in lipsticks, lip balms, lotions, and creams
Food Industry Fruit and vegetable preservation coatings, food packaging coatings, chewing gum additives
Pharmaceuticals Tablet coating, ointment bases, drug delivery carriers
Industrial Applications Premium shoe polish, floor wax, furniture polish, car wax

As a natural plant-derived wax, rice bran wax is increasingly favored by brands pursuing “clean label” and sustainable raw materials.

IV. Value of Investing in Rice Bran Wax Refining Projects

For rice bran oil processors, rice bran wax refining represents a low-investment, high-return value-added path:

  • Turning waste into treasure: Converting crude wax, previously treated as waste, into a high-value product
  • Extending the value chain: Expanding from rice bran oil production to wax refining, diversifying product offerings
  • Enhancing profitability: Refined rice bran wax commands a significantly higher market price than crude wax, substantially boosting overall profits
  • Promoting circular economy: Achieving comprehensive utilization of rice resources and reducing waste emissions
